Dr Justin Sherwin is a highly skilled ophthalmic surgeon, with special interests in cataract surgery and glaucoma management. Dr Sherwin completed his clinical ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, where he currently holds a public appointment, and sub-specialist training in glaucoma and cataract surgery at Oxford Eye Hospital, UK. He has a strong academic and research background and holds postgraduate degrees (MPhil, MChir, PhD) in epidemiology and eye research from the University of Cambridge, UK.

Dr Sherwin also treats patients with medical retinal conditions, including macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, and general eye conditions. He has expertise in the treatment of cataract, pterygium and glaucoma, and performs intravitreal injections for retinal conditions. Dr Sherwin manages glaucoma with medication, laser and surgical treatments. With surgery, he uses both traditional and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) approaches.

Research

Dr Sherwin has been very active in clinical and epidemiological research with over 50 peer-reviewed publications with a major focus on cataract, glaucoma, refractive error and the ocular impact of ultraviolet radiation and time outdoors. Over the last 5 years he has held a number of formal research appointments with prestigious institutions, including the Department of Public Health  and Primary Care, University of Cambridge, the Lions Eye Institute, University of Western Australia (Genetics/Epidemiology) and the Centre for Eye Research Australia, University of Melbourne (Clinical Genetics).

Community involvement & charitable work

Over the course of his ophthalmic career, Dr Sherwin has volunteered for the Fred Hollows Foundation (Nakuru, Kenya), Ronald McDonald House Charities (Melbourne, Australia) and Unite for Sight (a US non-government organisation) in Tamale, Ghana. He has undertaken research associated with the Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology, Tanzania.
