Dr Reich awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM)

25/06/2019

Vision Eye Institute ophthalmologist Dr Joe Reich was recently awarded a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List in recognition of his significant service to ophthalmology. Dr Reich, a highly experienced cataract and refractive surgeon, has been practicing for over 40 years and currently consults at Vision Eye Institute’s Camberwell, Coburg and Melbourne (St Kilda Rd) clinics.

Dr Reich was later appointed head of the Hospital’s eye clinic – a position he held for 20 years – and chairman of the senior medical staff. He became the first ophthalmologist in Victoria to use the excimer laser for laser vision correction, having designed the RVEEH laser suite and followed this by opening Melbourne’s first two-theatre day surgery.

Since becoming director of Vision Eye Institute in 2009, Dr Reich has focused on ensuring that the organisation continues to deliver the highest-quality ophthalmic care whilst engaging with doctors, staff and patients. With the evolution of laser eye technology, Dr Reich has maintained his expertise and performs LASIK and ASLA/PRK, specialising in cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange with extensive experience in multifocal and toric lenses. Dr Reich performs complex cataract surgery on patients with co-occurring eye diseases, such as keratoconus, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

‘I’m touched that my colleagues felt I was worthy to put forward for this award.’
