About Dr Paul Sia

Dr Paul Sia is a highly skilled, fellowship-trained glaucoma and cataract surgeon with expertise across the full spectrum of glaucoma care, from early disease to advanced cases. He tailors treatment using a range of management approaches, including medication, laser therapy and surgery. Dr Sia offers an extensive suite of surgical options for glaucoma, including filtration procedures such as enhanced trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage devices, minimally invasive bleb surgery with the Preserflo MicroShunt, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) using iStent, Hydrus and Miniject. He is also highly experienced in cataract surgery and frequently combines cataract removal with angle-based MIGS for patients with co-existing glaucoma. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Sia teaches and supervises cataract surgery at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He is committed to understanding each patient’s individual needs and delivering care of the highest standard.

Career highlights

Teaching
  • Dr Sia currently teaches within the acute ophthalmology and surgical services at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, where he also teaches and supervises trainee surgeons performing cataract surgery. He brings more than six years of experience in surgical supervision across New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.
  • During his time in New Zealand, Dr Sia served as a committee member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists as the Advanced Trainee Representative, contributing to the establishment of the College’s national teaching program for ophthalmology trainees.
  • Academically, he has held Associate Clinical Lecturer (Ophthalmology) appointments at both the University of Otago and the University of Adelaide.
  • In addition, Dr Sia has supervised multiple research students across both laboratory-based and clinical research settings, reflecting his ongoing commitment to education, mentorship and academic excellence.

Outside of medicine, Dr Sia enjoys travelling, playing badminton, photography and serving in his local church community.

Research

Dr Sia has contributed to foundational retinal research, culminating in the award of a lab-based Master of Philosophy in Ophthalmology. His research focused on experimental models of glaucoma-related retinal damage and the investigation of potential neuroprotective agents in the setting of acute glaucoma. During his time in the United Kingdom, Dr Sia served as a co-investigator on several glaucoma research trials, including the NAMing, MAGIC and ELIOS studies. He has also published numerous clinical research papers across a broad range of ophthalmic subspecialties, including retinal disease, glaucoma, and lid and orbital conditions, reflecting the depth and breadth of his academic contribution to the field.
