A/Prof Michael Lawless is one of Australia’s most experienced eye surgeons, having performed more than 30,000 surgical procedures. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at Sydney Medical School (University of Sydney) and is recognised throughout the world as an authority on laser eye surgery. A/Prof Lawless’ refractive expertise encompasses LASIK, ASLA/PRK and SMILE®. He is frequently invited to present at major international conferences.
In early 2022, A/Prof Lawless was the first ophthalmologist in Australia and New Zealand to perform SMILE Pro and one of the first in the world to perform LASIK using the Zeiss Visumax 800 laser system.
Given his long-standing interest in refractive surgery, A/Prof Lawless has decided to focus his time on his refractive practices at Vision Eye Institute Chatswood and Vision Eye Institute Hurstville.
In part, this decision was made to meet the demand from patients who wish to have A/Prof Lawless perform their refractive surgery. Additionally, A/Prof Lawless wanted to create more time for his involvement in and commitment to the advancement of laser eye surgery – specifically SMILE – through research, teaching and as a guest lecturer both nationally and internationally.
Due to focusing his time on his laser clinics, A/Prof Lawless no longer accepts referrals for cataract consultations.
With A/Prof Lawless’ shift in focus to his refractive clinics, patients can expect a shorter wait time for laser suitability consultations and subsequent surgery dates.
A/Prof Lawless was the director of the Sydney University advanced fellowship in corneal, refractive and cataract surgery from 2011–2021. He has also developed a similar teaching programme with the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India, and a similar course for ophthalmologists in China and Vietnam.
A/Prof Lawless has a black belt in the Japanese martial arts, karate and aikido. He also enjoys yoga, golf and, most of all, spending time with his family.
A/Prof Michael Lawless and Prof Gerard Sutton have authored an award-winning book, The Naked Eye, which explains laser eye surgery in simple, easy-to-understand language. Readers will come away with a clear understanding of the surgical options available today that may allow them to see clearly with ‘the naked eye’. This book is the perfect introduction to modern laser eye surgery for anyone considering the alternatives to glasses and contact lenses, regardless of their age, occupation or understanding of science.
A/Prof Lawless has a strong track record of clinical research in corneal, refractive and cataract surgery. He has more than 110 publications in peer-reviewed journals. At present, he is the principal investigator for the AcrySof™ IQ Vivity™ comparative lens study and the Vivity registry study. He is also involved in clinical trials for intraocular lenses to correct presbyopia as well as research studies looking at trifocal intraocular lenses, and the progress of the clinical application of SMILE laser eye surgery.
A/Prof Lawless also served as principal investigator in the following clinical trials:
