Tim Roberts is Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Royal North Shore Hospital. He is a highly experienced cataract and glaucoma surgeon. A/Prof Roberts has been honoured with Global Achievement Awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and other international societies for his contributions to scientific and educational programs and to the field of ophthalmology. His clinical and research interests are numerous and include the development and utilisation of new and innovative technologies and therapies in ophthalmology, medical ethics and education.

A/Prof Roberts has published over 60 research articles, book chapters and editorials and given over 200 presentations at scientific meetings around the world. He has also served on the editorial board of a number of journals and the American Academy of Ophthalmology Cataract textbook and sits on various government, industry, university and professional advisory boards.

A/Prof Roberts has been a consultant surgeon with the Far North Queensland Indigenous Eye Program and, along with a number of fellow Vision Eye Institute doctors, has been involved with the Myanmar Eye Care program (an initiative of The Eye Surgeons' Foundation). He has also been on mission trips to Angola and Nepal.

Research & publications

A/Prof Roberts attained his higher degree for research into nocturnal cardiovascular and respiratory risk factors in glaucoma.

His current research interests include:

  • the application of femtosecond lasers in cataract surgery
  • presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses
  • digital imaging systems
  • toric lenses in astigmatism management
  • complex cataract surgery and ocular trauma repair
  • minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS)
  • fixed/combination and slow-release glaucoma therapies.

To date, he has published more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and editorials, and delivered over 200 lectures locally and internationally. A/Prof Roberts has extensive experience with ICH/GCP training, has been a scientific assessor for the Northern Sydney Area Health Services Medical Research Ethics Committee, and has acted as principal investigator for many clinical studies. He is a supervisor and examiner for higher degree students.
