Dr Jack Kane is an internationally renowned expert in cataract surgery and a comprehensive general ophthalmologist.
He completed his medical degree at The University of Melbourne followed by a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmic Science through The University of Sydney. Subsequently, he undertook specialist ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, where he won the cataract surgery prize. To further advance his surgical skill, Dr Kane undertook two additional fellowship positions in cataract surgery at The Alfred Hospital and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide.
Dr Kane is widely published and highly cited within the field of cataract surgery. He created an algorithm for selection of the lens power in cataract surgery that is the international gold standard and has been used millions of times worldwide. Dr Kane licenses this algorithm to many of the major companies within the field and is a key opinion leader for technological advances in cataract surgery.
Dr Kane uses a personalised approach, recognising that each patient’s eyes and visual requirements are unique. His expertise in a broad range of lens technologies allows him to match the most appropriate technology to each patient’s needs.
Dr Kane’s easy-going and friendly nature – a product of his upbringing in Echuca – allows patients to relax and make an informed decision about their eye care.
Dr Kane’s main research focus is on intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation. His papers include many of the formative works shaping understanding of IOL selection for modern cataract surgery.
His own algorithm for selecting the IOL is the current gold-standard approach and has been shown to be the most accurate IOL power formula in over 25 peer-reviewed articles.
It has been used millions of times worldwide through a free-to-use website (www.iolformula.com) and is licensed to many of the major ophthalmic companies for use within their measurement devices.
Dr Kane is regularly invited to lecture internationally and is a key opinion leader for technological advances in cataract surgery. He continues to be involved in multiple international research projects in this field. He is a peer reviewer for Ophthalmology, Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Journal of Refractive Surgery and American Journal of Ophthalmology.
