Dr Michael Lawless is one of Australia’s most experienced eye surgeons, having performed more than 30,000 surgical procedures. He is a clinical associate professor at Sydney Medical School (University of Sydney) and is recognised throughout the world as an authority on laser eye surgery. Dr Lawless’s expertise encompasses laser eye surgery (LASIK, ASLA/PRK and SMILE), cataract and lens replacement surgery (including laser cataract surgery) and phakic intraocular lenses. In addition to his refractive work, Dr Lawless treats corneal conditions using procedures such as corneal cross-linking and corneal transplantation. He is frequently invited to present at major international conferences.

Research

Dr Lawless has a strong track record of clinical research in corneal, refractive and cataract surgery. He has more than 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals. At present, Dr Lawless is involved in clinical trials for intraocular lenses to correct presbyopia, including a new accommodating intraocular lens, PowerVision, for which clinical trials will commence in Australia in late 2017. He is also involved in research studies looking at the progress of the clinical application of SMILE laser eye surgery, and trifocal intraocular lenses.

Dr Lawless also served as principal investigator in the following clinical trials:

  • A Prospective, Randomised, Controlled, Proof of Concept Clinical Study for ACRYSOF IQ Achromatising Monofocal IOL in Cataract Patients (2012)
  • Visual Function Following Cataract Surgery in Monovision and Multifocal Patients (2011)
  • The Implantable Contact Lens for Myopia Study, taar, USA (2001–2002)
  • Conductive Keratoplasty for Hyperopia (as part of US FDA Submission) (1999–2000)
  • Refractive Laser Surgery for Myopia and Hyperopia (as part of Summit USA submission to US FDA) (1998–1999)

Community involvement & charitable work

Dr Lawless is the director of the Sydney University advanced fellowship in corneal, refractive and cataract surgery. He has developed a similar teaching programme with the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India, which is due to commence in late 2017.
