Dr Raj Pathmaraj is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with significant experience treating a broad range of ophthalmic conditions, including dry eye, red eye and ocular surface diseases. He is an expert in cataract and refractive surgery, and offers his patients laser cataract surgery. Dr Pathmaraj also specialises in glaucoma and other optic nerve diseases, with expertise in laser surgery for glaucoma.

Career highlights

  • Dr Pathmaraj began his training at the Aravind Eye Hospital and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology, a prestigious, premier ophthalmic centre in Madurai, South India. He then moved to the UK to complete his fellowship in ophthalmology from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and was inducted as a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of London. While there, he obtained a Diploma in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ireland.

  • Dr Pathmaraj migrated to Australia in 1992, and was awarded his Master of Medicine in refractive surgery from the University of Sydney. Currently, he is a member of the senior medical staff at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, and teaches RANZCO ophthalmology registrars in this role. He has also undertaken further training in corneal diseases and neuro-ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

Community involvement & charitable work

Dr Pathmaraj is actively involved in charitable foundations for eye care. He was the founding president of the Victorian Chapter of Australian Medical Aid Foundation Inc., an organisation dedicated to rebuilding health infrastructure in war-torn South East Asian countries such as Sri Lanka.

In addition, Dr Pathmaraj was a founding partner for Sight RANZCO Eye Foundation, which aims to reduce preventable blindness in rural and remote Australia and Asia by funding eye care research, improving community awareness and training ophthalmologists in developing countries. Dr Pathmaraj performed cataract and pterygium surgery at eye camps in Myanmar and Cambodia, and trained ophthalmology registrars in these countries.

He also regularly acts as Team Leader for the Sai Medical Unit Eye Clinic in Fiji, and lectures University of Fiji medical students and Pacific Eye Institute ophthalmology trainees.
