Dr Devinder Chauhan is an eminent retinal ophthalmologist with over 25 years of experience. He has specific expertise in the medical treatment of retinal, macular and vitreous conditions and routinely performs eye (intravitreal) injections and laser treatment.
Dr Chauhan treats a broad array of retinal conditions, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion. He is fluent in English and Hindi.
As part of the Myanmar Eye Care Project, Dr Chauhan regularly teaches local eye surgeons vitreoretinal surgery. This training program is conducted by several Australasian vitreoretinal surgeons, and is the only one of its kind in the world.
Dr Chauhan has been involved in clinical research studies using cutting-edge technologies, including piloting the world’s first needleless eye injection through a collaboration with researchers at the Centre for Eye Research Australia. For his doctoral thesis he conducted research into the interpretation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of the retina, using the first OCT machine in Europe, under the supervision of Professor John Marshall. His research paper on the interpretation of images is one of the most cited papers in the field.
Dr Chauhan is currently heavily involved in research in the area of dry AMD. His Box Hill clinic is one of only two sites in Victoria participating in a multi-centre international trial of a candidate drug for dry AMD, which is ongoing until 2019. He was also involved in a trial of ultra-short laser pulses to prevent progression of AMD, and subsequent studies for this are currently underway, with results expected in 2018.
