Dr Jason Cheng is a fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist with over 15 years of experience. He is a highly skilled surgeon who performs complex glaucoma surgeries, including trabeculectomy, tube drainage implants, angle surgery and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS).
In addition to his expertise in glaucoma, he is also an accomplished cataract surgeon and frequently combines cataract surgery with glaucoma procedures.
Dr Cheng serves as the Managing Partner at Vision Eye Institute Hurstville and holds public appointments at Sydney Eye Hospital, St George Hospital and Liverpool Hospital.
He speaks fluent Cantonese and basic Mandarin, enhancing his ability to communicate effectively with a diverse patient population.
Dr Cheng is committed to enhancing access to eye health services in underserved areas internationally. He serves as a Board Director of Sight For All, Secretary of the Gateway Committee (Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology) and a member of the Global Eye Health Committee (RANZCO). These roles share a common goal of enhancing and developing sustainable international eye care services through policy, education, capacity-building and collaboration.
He has also volunteered his services in Indonesia, Vietnam, Ghana, Pakistan, India, Cambodia, Fiji and China through organisations such as the Fred Hollows Foundation NZ, Orbis, Sight For All and China Vision Australia.
Dr Cheng enjoys snowboarding, scuba diving, hiking and photography.
Dr Cheng has strong research interests – he has been awarded over 14 research grants since 2012 – and has a special interest in improving glaucoma laser and surgery outcomes.
He is on the editorial board of the journal Eye, sits on the advisory board of a number of glaucoma surgery device companies and is part of several commercial and multicentre trials as both principal and co-investigator. He has authored multiple scientific articles and book chapters.
