Dr Simon Chen is a highly experienced retinal and cataract surgeon.

Dr Chen dedicates his practice to the treatment of retinal disease and cataract surgery. He is an expert in modern techniques of vitrectomy surgery to treat epiretinal membranes, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy, floaters, retinal detachments and ocular trauma; and in eye (intravitreal) injections for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions.

Dr Chen was one of the first surgeons in the world to perform laser cataract surgery and regularly receives referrals for complex cataract surgery, especially in patients with retinal disease, ocular trauma or following complications from previous eye surgery.

Dr Chen has volunteered his time in Cambodia and Papua New Guinea to train local ophthalmologists to treat retinal disease. He has also lectured to numerous community groups in Australia, including the University of the Third Age, Probus club, and the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation, about cataract surgery and retinal disease.

Research & publications

Dr Chen has been published extensively in the peer reviewed medical literature on various aspects of cataract and retinal surgery. He has been a principal investigator for numerous international clinical trials of novel treatments for retinal disease, including the landmark VIEW2 trial, which pioneered the use of an eye injection that blocks activation of vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) to treat age-related macular degeneration. This eye injection is now acknowledged by experts as one of the most effective and widely used treatments for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions available.
