Dr Paul Athanasiov is an experienced ophthalmologist and the Founder and Principal Ophthalmologist at Eye Surgeons SA. His areas of expertise include advanced laser cataract surgery, corneal grafting and surgery, pterygium excision and glaucoma surgery. He is also a skilled refractive surgeon and performs LASIK, PRK and refractive lens exchange. Dr Athanasiov also diagnoses and treats macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and keratoconus. In addition, he has been published widely in the areas of cataract, oculoplastic surgery and ocular anaesthesia. Dr Athanasiov is a member of Vision Eye Institute’s medical advisory board.
Dr Athanasiov completed his medical training at the University of Adelaide and further sub-specialist training in the areas of cornea, glaucoma and complex cataract surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 2013. His post-graduate qualifications also include a Master of Medicine (Ophthalmic Science) from the University of Sydney and a Master of Ophthalmology from the University of Adelaide. Since completing his training, he has been the Principal Ophthalmologist at Eye Surgeons SA and has additional consulting locations in Elizabeth Vale and Whyalla in South Australia. In co-operation with the Myanmar Government and local ophthalmologists, Dr Athanasiov delivered equipment and helped educate local eye health workers in 2009, 2011 and 2012 as part of Sight For All. In 2007, Dr Athanasiov also assisted the South Australian School for the Blind by helping staff understand and interpret medical and ophthalmic correspondence. In addition, he has previously been involved in organising fundraising activities for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Dr Paul Athanasiov has published 12 international articles in the areas of pterygium surgery technique, extended depth of focus and other intraocular lenses (IOLs) and the future of surgical logistics. He is also an active reviewer for numerous international peer-reviewed research journals, including Ophthalmology, The British Journal of Ophthalmology, The British Medical Journal, Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Epidemiology, The Indian Journal of Ophthalmology and Australian Family Physician.
