Research

Professor Vajpayee is a clinician-scientist working in the field of cornea, cataract and refractive surgery. His research is clinical (surgical) and has resulted in the development of innovative therapeutic and diagnostic modalities, improving treatment outcomes. In a world first, he pioneered the use of single donor corneal tissue to treat three patients by using novel techniques of customised component corneal transplantation surgeries. He can be credited with the following significant surgical innovations, which have been published in high ranking peer-reviewed scientific journals.

  • Technique of Nd:YAG laser sweeping to clean intraocular lenses
  • Corneal de-bulking for corneal transplantation for corneo-iridic scars
  • Large diameter lamellar keratoplasty in severe ocular alkali burns – a technique of stem cell transplantation
  • ‘Crater and chop’ technique for safe phacoemulsification in hard cataracts
  • Intralenticular bimanual irrigation: aspiration for subluxated lenses
  • ‘Hitch suture technique’ of DSAEK
  • Modified sutureless technique of DSAEK
  • Technique of ‘layer by layer’ phacoemulsification in posterior polar cataract
  • One donor cornea for three recipients: a new concept for corneal transplantation surgery
  • ‘Tuck in’ lamellar keratoplasty (TILK) for corneal ectasias involving corneal periphery
  • Computer simulation-assisted rotational autokeratoplasty
  • Surgical technique of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty in descemetoceles
  • ‘Flow out technique’ for safe and complete removal of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices after phacoemulsification cataract surgery
  • Technique of ‘double bubble’ deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty
  • OCT guided technique for the management of acute corneal hydrops
  • Thin lenticule Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty
  • Diamond knife-assisted deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty
