Our practice provides a range of specialist eye care services including laser eye surgery, cataract surgery and the medical and surgical treatment of retinal conditions. Our clinical team includes optometrists and ophthalmic technicians and, together with our highly experienced ophthalmologists, they pride themselves on delivering the highest standard of eye care to all patients. Members of our team are also fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.

We offer bulk-billed surgeon fees for eligible cataract patients. Other eye care services include glaucoma treatment, vitreoretinal surgery, pterygium surgery, care for nerve-related vision problems, management of diseases that affect the surface of the eye (e.g. dry eye, red eye, corneal ulcers and chronic conjunctivitis), as well as assistance with more general eye conditions.

Clinic facilities

Co-located with RiverCity Private Hospital in inner Brisbane, our eye clinic is equipped with the latest advances in ophthalmic technology, spacious waiting areas and modern patient amenities. Specialist diagnostic equipment complements our state-of-the-art laser technology to ensure each patient receives a customised outcome for optimal results – this includes patients having laser eye surgery. Day surgery procedures are performed on-site for patient convenience and continuity of care.

Clinic services

Our highly experienced ophthalmologists diagnose and treat a wide range of eye conditions, including those listed below.

Cataract surgery

During cataract surgery, your eye surgeon will replace the cloudy lens of the eye with an artificial one, known as an intraocular lens (IOL). With significant experience using the latest lens technology, our cataract surgeons are well-placed to help you decide on the option that best suits your vision and lifestyle needs.

Cataract surgery is performed as a day surgery procedure at RiverCity Private Hospital. It is one of the most commonly performed surgeries worldwide and usually takes less than 30 minutes (although you will be in the day surgery for approximately two hours in total).

Retinal procedures

We diagnose, treat and manage all retinal conditions, including retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, epiretinal membrane, macular hole and diabetic retinopathy.

Depending on the severity of your condition, you may be treated on the same day as your consultation.

Treatment may involve eye injections, laser therapy or retinal surgery, depending on the condition. Retinal laser treatment is performed in the clinic’s consulting or treatment rooms and involves little to no discomfort. Retinal surgery is performed in our co-located day surgery.

If you have a retinal condition, we may use dilating eye drops at your appointment, which allows us to view your retina clearly. Be aware that this will blur your vision and increase sensitivity to glare for 4–6 hours afterwards. Importantly, you will not be able to drive home from your appointment and you should make alternative arrangements.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a common condition that typically involves increased pressure inside the eye and damage to the optic nerve (eye nerve). When not treated appropriately, the conditions can gradually lead to permanent vision loss. Fortunately, there are a number of treatments that can help slow the progression of glaucoma and reduce eye pressure.

Treatment options for glaucoma include medication, laser treatment and surgery. For most people, regular use of medicated eye drops is sufficient to manage the condition. However, if needed, laser procedures, including selective laser trabeculoplasty and laser peripheral iridotomy, may be performed. Laser procedures are quick and painless and take place within our clinic.

For patients with glaucoma who do not respond to medical or laser treatments, surgical procedures (e.g. filtration surgery and MIGS/iStent) may be recommended. Glaucoma surgery requires a local anaesthetic and is performed at our co-located day surgery, RiverCity Private Hospital.

Corneal procedures

We diagnose and treat a wide range of corneal conditions, including keratoconus, corneal ulcers, recurrent corneal erosion, corneal dystrophies and pterygium (surfer’s eye). Treatment may require a number of complex procedures, including corneal transplantation, corneal ring implants, pterygium removal and collagen cross-linking.

Apart from minor procedures that can be performed in the clinic’s consulting or treatment rooms, most corneal procedures take place at our co-located day surgery.

Nerve-related vision problems

We perform comprehensive examinations to diagnose and treat a range of conditions that affect the brain and nervous system. These conditions include myasthenia gravis, brain tumours and strokes, giant cell arteritis, thyroid eye disease, optic neuritis, idiopathic intracranial hypertension and multiple sclerosis (MS). Treatment will depend on your specific condition.

Laser eye surgery

With the latest advancements in technology, we can now help the majority of people who wear glasses with some form of vision correction procedure – even if you’ve previously been told you don’t qualify. Having performed over 15,000 laser eye surgery procedures in Brisbane and Townsville, our laser eye surgeon Dr Lenton is a recognised expert in this area. He also has expertise in refractive lens exchange and implantable lenses.

At your initial laser consultation, we’ll carefully check your eyes to determine if you are suitable for vision correction and, if so, which procedure is most appropriate for you. As with any surgery, there are potential benefits and risks, which Dr Lenton will discuss with you.
