Our ophthalmology clinic in Brisbane provides a range of specialist eye care services including cataract surgery and the medical treatment of retinal conditions. Our clinical team includes optometrists and ophthalmic technicians and, together with our highly experienced ophthalmologists, they pride themselves on delivering the highest standard of eye care to all patients.
Other eye care services include glaucoma treatment, pterygium surgery, management of diseases that affect the surface of the eye (e.g. dry eye, red eye, corneal ulcers and chronic conjunctivitis), as well as assistance with more general eye conditions.

No-gap and bulk-billed cataract surgery at Vision Eye Institute Brisbane
Our cataract service helps make cataract surgery more accessible for patients with or without private health insurance.
No-gap cataract surgery (insured patients)
VEI Brisbane surgeons perform no-gap cataract surgery with most health funds through RiverCity Private Hospital, which is located next to the clinic. This is available to eligible patients with participating health funds and excludes any applicable excess or co-payment.
Bulk-billed cataract surgery (uninsured patients)
For patients without private health insurance, our clinic bulk-bills the cost of the initial consultation and the surgeon fees with a valid referral from your GP or optometrist. There will be out-of-pocket costs for the hospital and anaesthetist fees.
Surgery is performed at RiverCity Private Hospital, which offers an affordable, all-inclusive package to cover the cost of the hospital facility, anaesthetist, lens and medication. A comprehensive quote will be provided at the initial consultation. Payment plans are available subject to T&Cs.

Cataract surgery
During cataract surgery, your eye surgeon will replace the cloudy lens of the eye with an artificial one, known as an intraocular lens (IOL). With significant experience using the latest lens technology, our cataract surgeons are well-placed to help you decide on the option that best suits your vision and lifestyle needs.
Cataract surgery is performed as a day surgery procedure at RiverCity Private Hospital. It is one of the most commonly performed surgeries worldwide and usually takes less than 30 minutes (although you will be in the day surgery for approximately two hours in total).
YAG laser capsulotomy
Have you noticed your vision becoming cloudy again after cataract surgery? For some people, the membrane behind the artificial lens can become cloudy over time, causing blurred or hazy vision. A YAG laser capsulotomy is a quick, painless laser procedure that creates a small opening in the cloudy membrane to help restore clear vision.
The procedure is performed in the clinic, with no incisions or stitches required. We provide bulk-billed YAG laser capsulotomy, even if you had your cataract surgery with another provider.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a common condition that typically involves increased pressure inside the eye and damage to the optic nerve (eye nerve). When not treated appropriately, the conditions can gradually lead to permanent vision loss. Fortunately, there are a number of treatments that can help slow the progression of glaucoma and reduce eye pressure.
Treatment options for glaucoma include medication, laser treatment and surgery. For most people, regular use of medicated eye drops is sufficient to manage the condition. However, if needed, laser procedures, including selective laser trabeculoplasty and laser peripheral iridotomy, may be performed. Laser procedures are quick and painless and take place within our clinic.
For patients with glaucoma who do not respond to medical or laser treatments, surgical procedures (e.g. MIGS/iStent) may be recommended. Glaucoma surgery requires a local anaesthetic and is performed at our co-located day surgery, RiverCity Private Hospital.
Corneal procedures
We diagnose and treat a wide range of corneal conditions, including keratoconus, corneal ulcers, recurrent corneal erosion, corneal dystrophies and pterygium (surfer’s eye). Treatment may require a number of complex procedures, including corneal transplantation, corneal ring implants, pterygium removal and collagen cross-linking.
Apart from minor procedures that can be performed in the clinic’s consulting or treatment rooms, most corneal procedures take place at our co-located day surgery.
Pterygium treatment
Pterygium is a common condition in Queensland where prolonged exposure to sunlight, wind and UV radiation can cause a fleshy, wing-shaped growth to develop on the surface of the eye. While usually harmless, a pterygium can become irritated, cause redness and discomfort and, in some cases, grow onto the cornea.
We provide comprehensive assessment and treatment for pterygium. When symptoms cannot be adequately managed with topical eye drops or when vision is affected, pterygium surgery may be recommended. Surgery may also be performed for cosmetic reasons.
Our ophthalmologists use modern microsurgical techniques to carefully remove the pterygium and replace it with a graft of healthy tissue from the same eye. The graft is attached using stitches or special glue and helps reduce the risk of another pterygium developing.
At Vision Eye Institute Brisbane, we offer no-gap pterygium surgeon fees for patients with private health insurance. For people without private health insurance, we offer bulk-billed pterygium surgeon fees in conjunction with an affordable, fixed-price RiverCity Private Hospital package to cover the hospital fees.

Conveniently located only 2.5 km west of Brisbane’s CBD, our clinic is easily accessible by car. There is a multi-level carpark on-site (entry via Wienholt St). Street parking is also available on Munro St, Wienholt St, Grimes St and Ridley St.
By public transport
There are a number of public transport options. Bus route 470 (City–Toowong) stops opposite our clinic at the corner of Milton Road and Grimes Street (stop 10), and Auchenflower Railway Station (Ipswich/Springfield line) is a 5-minute walk away.
Disability access

Do I need a referral to see an ophthalmologist in Brisbane?
You will need a referral from a GP or optometrist to see an ophthalmologist. A referral is also required to claim any ophthalmologist consultation through Medicare.
