Clinic services

Vision Eye Institute Tuggerah Lakes is fully equipped for ophthalmic consultations, diagnostic testing and minor procedures. Surgical procedures are performed at Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital, across the road from the clinic.

Children’s eye health

During a comprehensive eye examination, we may perform tests to measure your child’s visual acuity (how well they can see) and their eye muscle health. We will also check for misalignment of the eyes and whether your child needs glasses.

Conditions treated include lazy eye (amblyopia), crossed eyes (strabismus), droopy eyelid (ptosis) and congenital cataracts and glaucoma.

Cataract surgery

Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). Our cataract specialists can provide you with a range of IOLs and help you select one based on your visual preferences and lifestyle. Cataract surgery is performed as a day surgery procedure at Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital.

Retinal conditions

Our ophthalmologists have special interests in medical retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular oedema and macular degeneration. Eye drops will be used to dilate your pupil so we can examine the back of the eye, where the retina is. These drops make your vision blurry and increase your sensitivity to glare – this should subside within 4 to 6 hours. Your ability to drive may also be affected.

A range of other tests and procedures may follow to help provide an accurate diagnosis and guide your treatment. Many retinal conditions can be sight-threatening, so your ophthalmologist may recommend an urgent procedure or surgery.

Glaucoma

The term ‘glaucoma‘ refers to a group of conditions where the optic nerve (eye nerve) becomes damaged, eventually leading to irreversible sight loss. Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common type. It is also known as the ‘sneak thief of sight’ because visual symptoms generally aren’t noticed until the disease is quite advanced.

Glaucoma treatment can involve medicated eye drops, laser or surgery (e.g. minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, trabeculectomy).

Nerve-related vision problems

We perform comprehensive examinations to diagnose and treat a range of conditions that affect the brain and nervous system. These conditions include myasthenia gravis, brain tumours and strokes, giant cell arteritis, thyroid eye disease, optic neuritis, idiopathic intracranial hypertension and multiple sclerosis (MS). Treatment will depend on your specific condition.

Laser eye surgery assessments

Advances in technology mean we can now help most people who require glasses with some form of vision correction procedure – even if you’ve previously been told you don’t qualify. Our clinic is part of a network of highly experienced doctors that provide best-practice care for patients across all ophthalmic subspecialties. This includes laser eye surgery (LASIK, ASLA/PRK), refractive lens exchange and implantable lenses.

At our clinic, we offer a free assessment for laser eye surgery during which we can assess your suitability for laser vision correction (refractive surgery). Corneal procedures

We treat a wide range of corneal conditions, including keratoconus, corneal ulcers, recurrent corneal erosion, corneal dystrophies and pterygium (surfer’s eye).

In many cases, a pterygium can be treated with the use of simple eye drops to manage symptoms, such as inflammation, mild pain, itching or a feeling of having grit in the eye. If the growth is significant or causes other problems, pterygium removal is usually recommended.

Our doctors are skilled in pterygium excision. Using microsurgery techniques, the surgeon will carefully remove the pterygium and replace it with a graft of healthy tissue taken from the same eye, which is fixed into place. The procedure will be carried out at Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital.

Treatment of other corneal conditions may require a number of complex procedures, including corneal transplantation, corneal ring implants and collagen cross-linking.

Minor procedures can be performed in the clinic’s consulting or treatment rooms. However, most corneal procedures take place at Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital.

Low-cost eye injection clinic

Eye injections (also called intravitreal injections) are used to treat a number of potentially blinding eye conditions, including macular degeneration (wet), diabetic eye disease and vein blockages. A regular, ongoing course of injections is usually required to preserve vision.

Unfortunately, around 26% of patients stop treatment after only six months, which may increase the risk of blindness. This is often due to cost, inconvenience and difficulty in accessing appointments for treatment.

At Vision Eye Institute Tuggerah Lakes, access to eye injections has never been more affordable or accessible.

To find out more about our low-cost injection clinic, download our brochure.

Transferring into the low-cost eye injection clinic is easy.

Simply call the clinic on (02) 4347 9955 and our friendly staff will talk you through the process.

The information on this page is general in nature. All medical and surgical procedures have potential benefits and risks. Consult your ophthalmologist for specific medical advice.
