Multiple, smaller waiting rooms ensure a quiet and comfortable space while you wait for your appointment (TV and complimentary WiFi provided).

Our modern, spacious clinic features nine consulting rooms as well as specialist treatment rooms for assessment and minor procedures. These are equipped with the latest technology for diagnostics and testing, including Optos for wide-angle retinal imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT) for detailed retinal imaging, a visual field analyser, and a Zeiss IOL Master for lens assessment prior to cataract or lens surgery.

Surgical and vision correction procedures are performed at Forest Road Day Surgery and Chatswood Day Surgery.

Clinic services

Our clinic diagnoses and treats a wide range of eye conditions – some of which are described below. After your consultation, an orthoptist is available to answer any additional questions you have about your condition and treatment plan or vision correction procedure so that you can make an informed decision about your eye care.

Laser eye surgery

With the advancements in technology, we can now help the majority of people who wear glasses with some form of vision correction procedure – even if you’ve previously been told you don’t qualify.

Click here to book a laser appointment or call 1800 1 LASER.

Vision Eye Institute has one of Sydney’s most experienced and reputable vision correction teams. We are pleased to offer refractive consultations with Dr Tess Huynh, A/Prof Michael Lawless and Prof Gerard Sutton at our Hurstville clinic. These doctors perform all types of vision correction surgery (including LASIK, SMILE® pro, ASLA/PRK, refractive lens exchange or lens implant, and implantable contact lenses) and will recommend the most suitable option for your situation.

We are one of the few laser clinics in Sydney to offer Contoura Vision – a revolutionary topography-guided LASIK procedure, which provides improved speed, accuracy and patient comfort. This technology combines a femtosecond laser, excimer laser and corneal mapping tool, allowing each patient’s unique pattern of corneal aberrations to be easily identified and corrected.

As with any surgery, there are benefits and risks and your surgeon will discuss these with you during the pre-surgical consultation.

Laser eye surgery procedures are performed in our dedicated laser suite at Chatswood.

Virtual consultations for laser eye surgery

To increase the appointment options/availability for patients seeking laser vision correction, we are now offering virtual consultations at Vision Eye Institute Hurstville. This service is available for A/Prof Michael Lawless and Prof Gerard Sutton and allows patients to access their appointment lists at our Chatswood clinic.

Patients booked in for a virtual consultation arrive at our Hurstville clinic at the designated appointment time and undergo the normal pre-consultation examination by one of our orthoptists (university-trained eyecare professionals). Test and scan results are then uploaded to the patient’s electronic medical record, which can then be accessed by the surgeon immediately.

The orthoptist remains with the patient during the actual video consultation to perform the final test (slit-lamp examination) live. A high-resolution camera on the slit lamp transmits the images to the surgeon in real time.

Patients who prefer an in-clinic consultation with A/Prof Lawless or Prof Sutton can still opt to do so. For more information about virtual consultation, please speak to our reception staff.

Cataract surgery

During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens of the eye is replaced with an artificial one. Traditionally, the entire operation was performed manually, but now surgeons can use laser technology to perform some of the steps. Patients can access both standard cataract surgery and laser cataract surgery at Vision Eye Institute Hurstville. With significant experience using the latest lens technology, our doctors are well placed to help you decide on the option that best suits your vision and lifestyle needs. Cataract surgery is performed as a day surgery procedure.

Corneal procedures

Our corneal specialists commonly diagnose and manage disorders such as keratoconus, pterygium (Surfer’s Eye), corneal ulcers, recurrent corneal erosion and corneal dystrophies. They have expertise in performing complex procedures, such as corneal transplantation, corneal ring implants, collagen cross-linking and pterygium removal.

Apart from minor procedures that can be carried out in the clinic consulting or treatment rooms, corneal procedures are performed in the day surgery.

Retinal procedures

We see all patients with retinal conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, epiretinal membrane and macular hole, diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment. Eye drops are used to dilate your pupil so that we can examine the back of your eye, where the retina is. Your vision will be blurry and you will have increased sensitivity to glare – this should subside within 4 to 6 hours. Please note that you will not be able to drive during this time and will need to make other arrangements to get home.

Treatments such as eye injections or laser therapy (which is different to laser eye surgery) may be performed on the same day, depending on the level of urgency. Retinal laser treatment is performed in the consultation room, and involves little or no discomfort. Patients requiring retinal surgery will have their procedure in the day surgery.

Low-cost eye injection clinic

Eye injections (also called intravitreal injections) are used to treat a number of potentially blinding eye conditions, including macular degeneration (wet), diabetic eye disease and vein blockages. A regular, ongoing course of injections is usually required to preserve vision.

Unfortunately, around 26% of patients stop treatment after only six months, which may increase the risk of blindness. This is often due to cost, inconvenience and difficulty in accessing appointments for treatment.

At Vision Eye Institute Hurstville, access to eye injections has never been more affordable or accessible.

To find out more about our low-cost injection clinic, download our brochure.

Transferring into the clinic is easy.

Simply contact our clinic on (02) 9330 6900 and our friendly staff will talk you through the process.

Glaucoma treatment

Glaucoma is a common condition that can gradually lead to permanent sight loss, but there are a number of treatment options that can stop or slow the condition from worsening. For most people, regular use of medicated eye drops is sufficient. If additional treatments are necessary, our glaucoma specialists can perform laser treatment and surgery to reduce pressure inside the eye.

Laser procedures for glaucoma (e.g. selective laser trabeculoplasty and laser peripheral iridotomy) are performed in the clinic, and are painless and quick. Surgical procedures (e.g. filtration surgery and MIGS/iStent) are performed under a local anaesthetic in our day surgery.

Reconstructive surgery (oculoplastics)

Our oculoplastic surgeons are specially trained to perform surgery around the eye socket, eyelid, tear ducts and the face. Conditions that may require reconstructive surgery include eyelid lesions and tumours, ptosis, blocked tear ducts and orbital fractures, to name a few. Apart from minor procedures like chalazion removal, these procedures are generally performed under local anaesthetic in our day surgery.

Fully accredited

We are committed to continuously monitoring and improving customer service. Our practice has developed a quality management system to meet the requirements of the National Safety and Quality Health Services Standards and achieve certification. These standards focus on the effectiveness of a practice’s quality management system in meeting the needs of its customers. Please let our reception staff know if you wish to provide us with feedback on our service – we welcome and appreciate all input.
